Varisas

The great composer Purandara Dasa hailed as Father of Carnatic music, created a set of fundamental exercises which are followed today. These are of five types:

1.    Sarali Varisas                     -    Fundamental exercises

2.    Madhya sthayi Varisas      -    Middle octave sequences

       Mandra sthayi Varisas      -    Lower octave sequences

       Tara sthayi Varisas            -    Upper octave seqences

3.    Janta Varisas                      -    Sequences in which rendering a note twice

4.    Dhatu Varisas                     -    zig-zag sequences

5.    Alankaras                            -    Multi-tala sequences
