Alankaras
A tala has several parts. the three that are commonly used are:
- Laghu | a beat followed by finger counts
- Drutam 0 a beat and a wave
- Anudrutam U a beat
Laghu can be of 5 types, depending on the number of units. These are called 'Jathis'
- Tisra laghu - contains 3 aksharas (beat and 2 fnger counts)
- Chaturasra laghu - contains 4 aksharas (beat and 3 fnger counts)
- Khanda laghu - contains 5 aksharas (beat and 4 fnger counts)
- Misra laghu - contains 7 aksharas (beat and 6 fnger counts)
- Sankeerna laghu - contains 9 aksharas (beat and 8 fnger counts)
There are seven varieties of talas, called Sapta talas.
Sapta talas and their Angas
- Dhruva tala - | 0 | |
- Matya tala - | 0 |
- Rupaka tala - 0 |
- Jhampa tala - | U 0
- Triputa tala - | 0 0
- Ata tala - | | 0 0
- Eka tala - |
Among the three angas, drutam and anu drutam are fixed. However, laghu varies in number of aksharas depending upon its jathi. If more than one laghu is present in tala, all the laghus have the same jathi. Because of the jathi bhedam of laghu, each of the sapta talas gives 5 talas by varying the jathi of the laghu present. Thus 7 talas of 5 jathis each yield 7*5 =35 talas.
