Sthayi Varisas
A series of svaras beginning wth sa and ending with ni is called Sthayi. The sthayi comprises seven svaras such as sa, ri, ga, ma, pa, dha and ni. The span of sapta svaras is known as Madhya Sthayi (mddle octave). The next span of sapta svaras beginning with shadja that comes after nishada is callled Tara Sthayi (upper octave). Further the next span of sevevn svaras above the tara sthayi is called Atitara Sthayi. The span of sapta svaras below madhya sthayi is called Mandra Sthayi (lower octave).] and the sthayi below this is known as Anumandra Sthayi. The sthayi in which we normally sing is the madhya sthayi.

Human voice has the range of only three sthayis in the middle. Only music instruments can reach in these five stahyis effortlessly.
